What to expect from laser hair removal?

May 14, 2018

To get the best results from laser hair removal, there is actually a fair amount of time and effort you need to put in before your treatment course. We will guide you through everything when you have your initial consultation but here is a rough guide about what to expect…

Is laser hair removal right for you?

Our laser hair removal Leicester team are able to treat all skin and hair types, both men and women for laser hair removal but there are some medications, skin conditions and health concerns that may mean laser hair removal isn’t for you. We adhere to very strict safety guidelines because of the medical grade equipment we are using. If we have any concerns about you receiving this treatment we will discuss these with you.

Also, we always do a patch test at least 48 hours before any treatment course us due to start.

Preparation for laser hair removal

In the run-up to your treatment, you will need to keep shaving the area you are going to have lasered. This is so the top of the hair is blunt and the root is strong and growing. This will give the laser the very best chance of killing the hair at the root to prevent regrowth.

When you arrive for your treatment you need to have not shaved for two days though, so there is some of the hair growing through the skin.

We know this can be tricky, especially for women wanting laser on their faces. It is short term pain for long-term gain though. The more effort you put into preparing your hair for the treatment the more effective it will be and in a shorter timeframe.

You also need to tink about sun exposure because we will only do a laser treatment when you are not going to be exposed to the sun for 2 weeks and then 2 weeks after exposure. So you need to plan your treatment to avoid holidays.

There are also certain products you need to avoid using on your skin for 2 days before and after your treatments. This is mainly retinol products, but we will talk to you about your skin care routine at your consultation.

What will happen during your treatment?

Our treatment room is a laser safe room which has been specially designed and decorated to reduce laser glare and reflection around the room, and when a treatment is in progress we have to display a sign on the outside of the door like hospital x-ray departments; so nobody comes in when the laser is working.

We will put some gel onto the area to be treated and then because our laser is medical grade, you will need to wear protective eye goggles and so will your consultant.

From your skin and hair type diagnosis, we will calculate the correct settings of the laser for you. We will work in a range of settings, which should be pain-free.

Each treatment is fairly quick, obviously, this depends on the size of the treatment area though. The laser glides over your skin. You might feel it and you might not. If you do, it can feel like a quick snap of an elastic band. Each area being treated can also have a different sensitivity level.

How long do you have to wait between treatments?

For facial laser hair removal, we can treat you every 4-6 weeks. For body laser hair removal, it is every 6-8 weeks.

How many treatment sessions will you need?

We recommend a course of 6 sessions for each treatment area. Although, everybody is different, so we will constantly monitor your progress.

It might be that you get the results you want after 4 sessions or it might be that we recommend an additional 3 sessions after your initial course.

The stage of the growth cycle of your hair can impact your results, as can any medical conditions such as Polycystic Ovary Syndrome.

We will always be honest with you about your progress with laser hair removal. If we can see it isn’t working for you we will talk to you about it, likewise, we won’t drag out a course of treatments if we can get results much quicker.

What results can you expect from laser hair removal?

For some people, they achieve total hair removal in the treated area. For others, they see a vast reduction in hair growth but not total removal. Everyone is different because of their hair type, skin type, the area of the body being treated and any medical conditions etc.

You need to carefully consider your motivations for the treatment and what you want to achieve and discuss this with us at your initial consultation.
