Pigmentation and hyperpigmentation

October 29, 2019

If you have areas of darker skin pigmentation you are not happy with, you are not stuck with it. We have a few different options that can even out your skin tone.

What is pigmentation and hyperpigmentation?

All our skin has pigmentation but some of us develop patches of skin that are darker, more pigmented than the rest of our skin. Increased pigmentation can occur anywhere on our bodies and it’s often referred to as hyperpigmentation. It can affect any skin type but is often more prevalent in darker skin tones or in women with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome.

These areas of increased pigmentation are not usually harmful. However, they can be a sign of other issues.

What causes the pigmentation?

The main types of darker patches on the skin are caused by:

  • Melasma – is where hormonal changes during pregnancy can cause dark patches on the skin. They can appear anywhere but are most common on the face.
  • Sunspots – these are often called ‘liver spots’ or ‘sunspots’. They are very common and appear on areas of the skin that get the most sun exposure; like the face and hands.
  • Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation – dark patches of skin can be created where you have experienced an injury or inflammation. The main example of this is when a spot has cleared up you can get a dark patch of skin as part of the healing process. Sometimes, dependent on the severity of the acne/spot, the dark patch remains.

Your options to get rid of pigmentation and hyperpigmentation

At Skintique, we have three main treatments for creating a more even skin tone where pigmentation is a problem.

  • Lumeca
  • Skin peel
  • HydraFacial

Which option we recommend will depend on your natural skin tone and the size and placement of your pigmentation.

Lumeca

This is a clinical treatment that involves the use of intense pulse light (IPL). Because of the use of IPL, we are only able to use this on skin types 4 and below. If you have pigmentation concerns and you have a skin type of 5 and above, we have other options, detailed below, that would be suitable for your skin.

The Lumeca treatment process of shown in a video on our treatment page. It is not a painful process and you will see results after one session but we usually recommend a course of three treatments, one every four weeks.

We thoroughly cleanse your skin before applying an ultrasound gel to help the light transfer to your skin. The IPL targets the cells deep in the skin to shatter and break them down. This causes new cells to form that don’t have the darker pigmentation.

The end result being, that over the treatment process your skin pigmentation is evened out, leaving your new skin looking bright and fresh.

After each treatment your pigmentation can look darker and more prominent. This skin will then crust and flake away.

Before, during and after your treatment it is extremely important to use a good zinc-based sunscreen on your skin every day. If you don’t, you will end up with the same pigmentation issues. Sunscreen protects you from further or new damage.

Skin peel

Our Alumier MD skin peels are a great way to tackle a multitude of skin concerns, including pigmentation.  You will get results after one session, but we recommend a course of six. The frequency of these treatments will be dependent on your skin type and severity and size of your pigmentation.

Because our chemical peels are effective but gentle on your skin, they don’t cause any post treatment downtime. Although, you may have a slight flush and redness straight afterwards.

We always start by thoroughly cleansing and balancing your skin. We’ll then apply a hydration mask for 5-15 minutes; it is proven for a peel to be more affective when applied to well hydrated skin.

Next we’ll apply your chemical peel with a brush. You may feel some tingling and slight heat, this is normal. It shouldn’t be uncomfortable. The peel we use will be tailored to your skin.

Once this process is complete, we apply a hydration serum and a high SPF zinc-based sunscreen.

Over the course of treatments, you will notice your pigmentation getting lighter and lighter. You may also get increased flaking in the area of your pigmentation. The main thing we can’t stress enough, is to keep applying SPF every day to give your skin the best chance.

HydraFacial

Our HydraFacial process is a fantastic treatment, again for targeting a multitude of skin concerns.

Having a course of six, weekly HydraFacials will vastly improve not only the appearance of your pigmentation but will also greatly benefit your overall skin health.

The process uses non-invasive Vortex Technology™, suitable for all ages and skin types. It comprises of a six-stage process:

1. Detoxification
2. Exfoliation
3. Brightening
4. Extraction
5. Hydration
6. Rejuvenation

We will also use the Britenol Vortex-Booster™. This is clinically proven to minimise the appearance of increased pigmentation, leaving skin glowing with a more even complexion.

There is no pain involved or any downtime afterwards. Your skin maybe flushed after a treatment and we recommend not wearing any make up for at least 12 hours.

Again, to increase your chances of the pigmentation not coming back, you need to be wearing a high SPF zinc-based sunscreen every day.
